About Pilates
Pilates has enjoyed a devoted following since its beginnings in the mid 1920s. Devised by Joseph Pilates (1893-1967) the work was initially developed whilst Pilates was interned in England in a prisoner of war camp during WW1, his aim being to help fellow inmates recover from their injuries. Using basic resistance equipment made of bed-springs and boards he created apparatus which helped to improve body alignment and strength. So effective was it that this apparatus remains virtually unchanged almost a century later.
In 1926 on the Atlantic crossing to New York he met his future wife Clara and together they refined their new technique called Contrology later to become known as Pilates. The 34 initial exercises were soon embraced by many in New York, among them sports people, actors and members of the thriving dance community who recognised the benefits this new method had to offer helping to enhance performance and prevent injury without creating bulk. Pilates has survived the test of time, transcending fads and fashion to establish itself as the respected physical therapy now enjoyed by so many worldwide.

" I have known Christina for 30 years as a personal friend as well as a Pilates teacher. My first experience with her was in Notting Hill Gate in 1999 which is when Christina first launched as a Pilates teacher. Since the start of Lockdown I have seen Christina over Zoom twice a week. I have had back surgery for three trapped nerves and I also have Spinal Stenosis. On Zoom Christina helps me to stretch extensively in areas surrounding the back, but also generally and she responds immediately to any new complaint that I have. Christina is amazingly versatile in her approach, helping to strengthen all parts of the body and in my case paying particular attention to the lower back. I recommend Christina to everyone. I feel that she is not just a regular Pilates teacher but a truly remedial Pilates teacher. In my view she is a wonderful person, incredibly knowledgeable and brilliant at her job." KJ
